Carmel
Allan Judson McGown, died at his home on Mt. Laurel Lane in Carmel on February 15, 2020, after spending several days enjoying the care and company of family and friends. He leaves o legacy of devotion to family; a fierce belief in self-reliance and hard work; a commitment to friendship and service; and a gratefulness for a life well lived.
Born in Carmel on September 30, 1933, Allan grew up on his family farm developing a lifelong interest in agriculture with the guidance of his parents Mark and Hester Carter McGown. After graduating from Carmel High School, in 1952, he attended the University of Maine earning a degree in animal husbandry. He joined the United States Army in 1954, serving in Alaska where he made life long friends. In 1957 he enlisted in the Maine State Police serving until February,1980, when he retired as a corporal. Following retirement Allan became the General Manager of Tom Sawyer, Inc. until 1990.
In 1960, he married Lorraine Thomas. They forged a loving partnership for over sixty years. Together they created homes in Carmel and “Listed Off”, in Spruce Head. Each home reflected an exceptional sense of style and design.
Allan was the proud and devoted father to his son, Jeffrey and wife, Janey of Norridgewock; his daughter Kristi of Carmel; his grandchildren, Thomas and Stephanie of Carmel; and Kathryn and Dan of Durham and their mother, Susan of Orrington. Ellie and Gracie, his great granddaughters, brought a special twinkle to his eye. What memories they have of his faithfulness to each of them. Not to be forgotten is Finn, always by his side. Allan had many nieces and nephews among the McGown and Thomas clans. Candy, Mark, Rodney, and their families were also his neighbors.
Never an enthusiast of idle hands, Allan was known for tackling any project with gusto. He could create, build, or repair almost anything, a standard bearer of hard work and Yankee ingenuity. Plowing snow, planting and tending a garden, cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood, were all part of an enjoyable day for him.
From his Thomas family, Allan inherited a love of the ocean. He spent many hours aboard TOMKAT lobstering and clamming the waters and shores around Spruce Head. His catch of the day was enjoyed by many when he hosted “Cousins Day” and reunions with classmates. In addition to time spent at Spruce Head, Allan had hunting, fishing, cribbage and golfing companions with whom he enjoyed a good story, a good-hearted prank, or a toast to time with a friend.
Allan was active in many service organizations. He was a trustee of the Carmel Union Congregational Church; a member and past master of Benevolent Lodge #87 AF & AM of Carmel, Anah Shriners, an Aide Emeritus and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters #150. He belonged to Eastern Maine Senior Golf Association. Each organization was the beneficiary of Allan’s willingness to do for others and generosity with his time and talents.
