Brewer – Allen W. Cratty of Brewer passed away on June 9th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Waterville on November 30, 1952, the son of Bernard R. and Barbara M. Cratty.
While a child, his family moved from Waterville to Amarillo, Texas and back to China, Maine before settling in Winslow.
He enjoyed the Boy Scouts and developed his lifelong love of the outdoors.
He graduated from Winslow High School in 1972 and furthered his education at the University of Maine. He went on to become a chef and worked at several Bangor area restaurants. He continued his pursuit of outdoor activities. He hiked most of the Appalachian Trail in Maine and became known as a “trail angel.” He would hike to lean-tos leaving supplies or to stream crossings to leave dry socks. The title of “trail angel” fit Al’s easy going and caring nature.
For almost four decades, he was a delivery driver for Magazines Inc. travelling the entire state. He enjoyed meeting and knowing his fellow Mainers on a personal level. He was a furniture maker, a master tinkerer and was known as “The Best Landlord in All the Land.” He owned hundreds of cars with his pet being a 1968 Chevelle SS 396.
He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by sisters Jan Cratty Antworth of Old Orchard Beach, Gail Cratty of Ocala, Florida, Lynn (Dee Dee) Tulp of Biddeford, Kathleen Jones of Phoenix, Arizona, Mariah Cratty of Maine, and Jess Therrien of Magnolia, Texas as well as brother Marc Rancourt of Magnolia, Texas, his sons Kirk A. Cratty of Cape Elizabeth and Nathan Holmes of Hudson, and best friend Marco Arel of Brewer.
Al always said, “Every road leads to everywhere. We’re not lost. We’re just on one of those roads.”
Services were private for the family.
