Alwyn Fitzgerald

August 30, 1928 — May 27, 2015

Hampden – Alwyn Lester Fitzgerald, 86, died May 27, 2015, at a local healthcare facility. He was born August 30, 1928 in Holyoke, MA, the son of William J. and Gertrude (Tauscher) Fitzgerald.

Al was born and lived in the Ingleside section of Holyoke, MA until his family moved to Conway, MA when he was 2 years old. Soon after graduating from high school, he entered the US Air Force. Returning from a tour of duty in Germany with his wife, Angela, they settled in Northampton, MA, where they lived until 2011 when he and Angela moved to Hampden. Al was a heavy equipment salesman for International Harvester. During his career he was able to join the Master’s Club, a club he became a member of because he was the top salesman east of the Mississippi. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol for over 20 years, patrolling mostly at Carinthia Ski Area in W. Dover, VT. Al also owned and operated a Christmas tree farm and an apartment building. He was always busy making furniture, building homes, or doing just about anything else with his hands. He cherished his time at their Vermont camp where he loved spending time skiing, x-country skiing, snow shoeing, and boating on Harriman Reservoir. For more than 25 years he and Angela went to Austria every fall to hike in the Alps with friends in St. Martin. He was extraordinarily proud of his Besuchsehrung, awarded by that town for the yearly pilgrimage.

In addition to his parents, Al was predeceased by his 2 older brothers, William and James. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Angela; daughter, Rebecca Dauphinee and husband Daniel, and son Alwyn “Fitz” Fitzgerald and wife Kate; grandchildren, David Dauphinee and fiancée Christina Hurd, Julia Fitzgerald, and Ian Fitzgerald; 2 sisters-in-law Albina Fitzgerald and Marian Fitzgerald; and many nieces and nephews.
