CARIBOU & ORONO – Anita Lee (Cunningham) Martin, 91, went to be with her Lord April 13, 2020, at an Orono healthcare facility. She was born March 4, 1929, in Milo, the daughter of Wesley “Jim” and Clara (Silva) Cunningham.
Anita attended schools in Patten. She married her husband Alsime “Sam” Martin in 1945, and together shared 58 years of marriage. Anita and Sam were longtime members of the United Baptist Church of Caribou. Anita loved her country and Christian music. She enjoyed reading, and she was known to have read every book in the UBC library. Anita was a compassionate and generous woman. She was a sensitive and empathic listener, making her the confidant among her siblings. She deeply loved her children, and was a wonderful mother. Anita was especially fond of her grandchildren. She will be remembered by her grandchildren for the special breakfasts she would make for them growing up. The legacy Anita leaves behind is profound, but most notably, she was a woman who lived out the Bible in everything she did. She loved the Lord and loved God’s Word, and actually wrote out in her own handwriting the entire Bible. The greatest memory of her legacy will be walking into her kitchen and seeing an open Bible on a Bible stand on her kitchen table. She will be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Anita was predeceased by her firstborn son, Gary Lee; her husband, Alsime “Sam”; two brothers, Jim, and Wayne; and five sisters, Becky, Marie, Pat, Laverne, and Marion. She is survived by two sons, Michael Martin and wife, Kay of Hermon, Jeffrey Martin and wife, Sue of Swanville; a daughter, Lori Bourgoine of New Sweden, 11 grandchildren, Barry Martin and wife, Wendy, Tammy Tozer and husband, Jason, Aaron Martin and wife, Rebecca, Jennifer Sauter and husband, Carl, Katherine Martin and wife, Tara, Jeremiah Martin, Sara Miller and husband, Beau, Luke Martin and wife, Allison, Zachariah Martin and wife, Tatiana, Makaila Bourgoine, and Seph Bourgoine; 16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and a special son-in-law, Joe Bourgoine, whom she loved.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff of Orono Commons for their superior care of Anita during her stay. Special mention to Bonita, Karen, Vicki, Kat, and especially, Sheila, who loved her deeply.
A graveside service will be held at Patten Cemetery, Patten, at a date and time to be announced later in the year. Those wishing to remember Anita in a special way may make gifts in her memory to Bangor Gideon’s Society of Maine, PO Box 134, Bangor, ME 04402-0134.
