Anita Pettengill

September 8, 1936 — February 21, 2023

Anita was born in Winthrop on September 8, 1936, to Armand and Rita (Gendron) Mayo.
She was predeceased by husband Herbert Pettengill, brothers Raymond Mayo and Joseph Mayo. She is survived by her only son Raymond Pettengill and his wife Julie and grandson,
Scott Pettengill and his wife Rachel. Also, one brother James Derocher, three sisters Joanne Hisler, Patricia Smith, and Jean Robinson. A very special sister-in-law Laurette Mayo along with many nieces and nephews. In addition, Irene Kaherl, mom’s friend for over 60 years! I also want to thank my aunt Jean for the many ways she supported mom emotionally and demonstrated her love through visits, calls and gifts.

Prior to her death, mom was a 5-year resident of Westgate Center Assisted Living in Bangor Maine. I cannot say enough about the loving care and attention she received by the entire staff. While I love all of those who cared for mom, I could not possibly begin to name everyone,
who made my mother’s stay there memorable. Between the activity director Sue along with Heather and Joan from the Rehab department they kept mom active even though she might have wanted to just sit in her room and watch TV. Emily Sharp was especially helpful and kind when it came to helping mom, as was Bonnie. I do however want to give special thanks to Jen Dodge. She became one of mom’s most cherished friends. Even after leaving Westgate,
Jen continued to visit mom and providing gifts and flowers. She loved Jen’s laugh. And thank you Bob (Thelma’s Son) and Doreen for their ongoing concern for mom’s welfare.

Mom worked at the shoe mill in Livermore Falls back in the 50’s and later for Dr. Baron and Drs.
Richardson in Winthrop. She and Gladys Richardson formed a very close relationship.

During her life mom had few chances to become part of a community, but Westgate gave her that opportunity and she flourished. I can’t tell you the number of times people related stories they recalled about mom and how much everyone loved her. She was always kind and had a keen sense of right and wrong. She was not afraid to share what she thought and was motherly toward all. Although she did not have an easy life, she never allowed her situation to influence how she treated other people.

Thank you, mom, for raising me to be like you. Love, your son, Ray.
