ANN CHAPLES
BIDDEFORD - Ann D. Chaples, 83, passed away February 25, 2019, at St. Andres in Biddeford, Maine. She was born July 26, 1935, in Bangor, the daughter of Frank and Barbara (Elliot) Donchecz.
When our mother, Ann Chaples, passed away on Monday, February 25th, we thought about how she would want to be eulogized. What would she want people to know about her? How would she want to be remembered? This is what we knew about her, and would like to share.
“What we remember about our mom was that she always loved music- opera especially-anything classical, and in fact in her younger years she trained to be an opera singer. Our home, growing up, was never without her singing. She also loved wild, bold prints, and dark colors - especially in her choice of lipstick. Our mom was a voracious reader, and was never without a book at her side, especially as she got older. Mom loved shopping, and we would often joke that she had multiples of everything because she never took an inventory or made a list. She also loved good food and travel. Chocolate, pizza, lobster, Jeopardy, and a good game of Yahtzee always made her content. We remember, as children, she used to make us tomato soup and noodles when we didn’t feel well - and it always made us feel better. Our mom treasured birthdays and Christmas - making them magical, and she always made us feel important, safe, and secure as we grew. We remember that when you made our mom laugh really hard her eyes lit up the room, and it was great to see her laugh and be silly. At the same time, our mom was private in her choices and her friendships, but her heart was always open and she’d lend a hand when and if she could. Our mom deeply loved her family, and she treasured her children and grandchildren, and we are so grateful that she had the brief chance to get to know both Peter and Brian. As we look back on her life, and all the times we spent together, one thing stands out - our mom was, and always will be, an original. If mom had had her druthers, we suspect she would have made sure she’d still be wearing her favorite shade of charcoal briquette red lipstick and listening to Puccini. We just want all to know how much you were loved Mom, and how much we will miss you.”
