Ann Weisleder

August 19, 1945 — November 8, 2024

Orono - Ann Dette (Irvin) Weisleder, 79, died unexpectedly at her son's home in Kentucky on November 8, 2024, after coping with Alzheimer's. Ann was the only child of Walter and Vivian (Eichelberger) Irvin, born on August 19, 1945, in Lewistown, Pennsylvania.

Ann graduated from Lycoming College, where she met her husband, Denis. They married in 1969. After living in Hartford, Connecticut, they moved to Maine where they resided for over 50 years, living in Bangor and then to a farm in East Corinth. After retiring, Ann and Denis resided in Bangor and then Orono with several beloved dogs and cats.

Ann loved education and earned her master's degree from the University of Maine. She taught a variety of areas, including Head Start in Hartford, Connecticut, running her own nursery school, night school, gifted and talented, migrant, and in the regular classroom. In SAD 64, she was a member of the school board. Ann was active in the Maine Education Association, serving as the local president and Chair of the Benefits Trust Committee. Chairing the Maine State Board of Education was a capstone to her career in Education. Ann was one of the original authors of the Maine Learning Results.

Ann was a talented musician, playing the piano, flute, and piccolo. She was an All-State musician in Pennsylvania and marched with the Penn State Blue Band as a high school student.
She was known for her intelligence and quick wit - creative writing and reading were her joys, having studied English Literature in college. Humans and animals were drawn to her; she accepted everyone. Her healing energy and words soothed many. Ann qualified as a Master Gardener and loved feeding and observing wild birds. On the farm, she was a hard-working homesteader and took pride in cooking and baking from scratch and canning foods grown in her garden. She loved racing her red Sunbeam convertible in the 1960's. Ann strived for peace and loved purple and elephants.

Ann is survived by a daughter and her husband, Lanissa and Brian Nadeau, of Bangor, Maine; a son, and his wife, Dr. Noah Weisleder and Melissa Weisleder LaGreca, of Lexington, Kentucky; a son and his partner, Zachary Weisleder and Suzanne Gagnon, of Hampden, Maine; and her three grandchildren, Joanne, Denis King II, and Lucas Weisleder.
