Arthur Butterfield, 78, passed away peacefully January 31, 2023 at his home in Clifton.
He was born in Bangor, October 15, 1944 the son of John R. and Hazel (Rogers) Butterfield.
Arthur attended a one room schoolhouse in Clifton and graduated from Brewer High School in 1963. He married Ellen Tucker on September 24, 1966. Arthur started working for Maine Central Railroad in 1967 as a brakeman. Their daughter Julie was born in 1968. Arthur was then deployed with the US Army on September 30, 1969 to serve in Germany and then Vietnam.
Their son, James was born in 1970. Arthur served in the army until March 8, 1971 and received as honorable discharge.
He returned to the railroad and became an engineer, a job he held until retiring in 2004.
Arthur was an avid outdoorsman, loved to hunt, fish and trap. More recently he loved to ride the back roads in his jeep.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen (Tucker) Butterfield, daughter, Julie and husband Shawn Clewley; son , James “Jim” and wife Sara Butterfield; grandchildren, Nichole and Joey Clewley and Katie (Butterfield) Harris, Kristi and Madison Butterfield, Ryan and Nathan Brown; great grandchildren, Roman and Bretton McLeod and Allison and Jacob Harris. A brother, Cary Butterfield; brother-in-law, Edward Tucker; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arthur was predeceased by his parents, step-father, Stanley Smith, brother, Jack Butterfield, sister, Elizabeth”Betty” Mace Makevich, nieces and nephews, Jeffrey Butterfield, Jaye Mace, Beth Mace and Asa Mace. In-laws, Howard and Lillian (Foster) Tucker and brother-in-law, John Tucker.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 2 pm to 4 pm Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer.
Interment with military honors will be held in the spring at Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
