ORONO - Arthur W. McDaniel, 82, of Orono, Maine, previously of Sebring, FL and Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Dec 23, 2013 after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born in Queens, NY on May 6, 1931 to the late Samuel A. and Evolyn Howell McDaniel. Art was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Genevieve Hedrick McDaniel, his 2nd wife Frances Gochenour McDaniel, and brothers George and Robert McDaniel. He is survived by daugher Susan M. Tkachick (Robert) of Newark DE, son David A. McDaniel (Heather Selin) of Jackson, Maine, brother Alton McDaniel (Lucille) of St. John, KS, sister Shirley Rogers (David) of North Manchester, IN, brother-in-law Olin Hedrick of Franklin, WV, step-children Sue Cassel (David) of Center Valley, PA, Harold Gochenour (Deanna) of DeFuniak Springs, FL, Denise Parillo (Larry) of Northridge, CA, one grandson and many step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Art had degrees from Patchogue High School, Long Island NY, Bridgewater College in Virginia, and the University of Delaware. He served in the Navy, and was a high school english teacher and guidance counselor in the Delaware public schools. He was the Assistant Director of Continuing Education at the University of Delaware for many years, and retired from UD in 1986. Along with education, Art's favorite passion was travel. He spent many happy hours planning trips, and driving around the country with his family. He was also a long-time member of the Church of the Brethren.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the wonderful, compassionate staff, both past and present, at Dirigo Pines. They cared for Art like he was one of their own family, and they and the staff of Hospice of Eastern Maine made him feel loved and comfortable during his final days.

A graveside service will be held 11 AM Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin, West Virgina. A service of Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.Brookings-Smith.com
