Ashley Anne Gallant of Holden, Maine, passed away on October 30, 2024, surrounded by her loving family only weeks after her diagnosis with cancer.
The daughter of Thomas and Dolores (Strand) Gallant, Ashley was born and raised in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, the fourth of five children. She was involved in many musical and community activities while growing up. She graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in 1975, received her B.A. from the University of Maine in 1983, and her Master of Arts in Speech Communication in 1985. Ashley worked in Bangor area schools as a speech-language pathologist. She was a passionate advocate for her students and devoted herself to finding a way to unlock each child’s ability to communicate, positively impacting the lives of countless local children and their families. She retired from Bangor Schools in 2021.
Ashley married Matthew Alan Tilley in 1981. The couple moved to Holden, Maine and, with their own hands, built a house in the woods. She and Matt raised two children there and enjoyed outdoor activities of all kinds including hiking and camping in Baxter State Park. After they separated in 2000, Matt and Ashley remained friends and co-parents. In 1997 Ashley became a business owner, establishing the Double A Tack Shop in Holden. She was involved with local horse groups and spent many hours riding the trails of Maine on her two Icelandic horses, Mosa and Rahki. Her trip to Iceland to see Icelandic horses in their native country was a highlight of her many travels. She also enjoyed kayaking with friends and walking in the woods with her dog. Ashley’s favorite times were those she spent as Nana for her two adored grandchildren and in 2022 she moved to Hampden to be closer to them. She often walked the mile to their house to visit.
Ashley was predeceased by her parents and older sister, Daphne Gallant Sprague. She is survived by her beloved daughters, Ruth Tilley and Ezabell Tilley England; son-in-law, Ryan England; the lights of her life, grandchildren, Remy and Rose England; brother, Stephen Gallant and wife, Joyce; sister, Kiki Gallant Scovel and husband, Cal; brother, Joshua Gallant and wife, Vanessa; brother-in-law, David Sprague; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-4pm Saturday, December 7,2024 at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith 163 Center St. Bangor.
