AUSTIN CLIFFORD CARTER, SR.
HERMON- Austin C Carter, Sr., 96 died October 11, 2022 at St. Joseph’s hospital. He was born May 5, 1926, in Montville, the son of Lee Cates Carter and Gertrude Newell Carter.
Austin was a student at Bangor High School in 1944 when he left early to serve with the U.S. Army in WWII. After the war he finished high school and attended the University of Maine, graduating in 1953. While studying in Orono he married the love of his life, Charlene Mae Drew of Bangor. In 1955, they relocated to Bar Harbor when Austin was hired as a finance manager for the Jackson Laboratory. They lived there for over 30 years, and Austin served on the Housing Authority there for 25 years.
During his tenure at the Jackson Lab he also served as the director of budget and the director of financial planning. From 1971 to 1987, he was assistant treasurer of the Lab. He was also a financial consultant for the National Institute of Health for eight years. Austin was also a member of the Rotary club and was a Noble of the Anah Temple Mystic Shrine for over 50 years. One of his passions was genealogy, and he served as the treasurer of the Maine Geneological Society for a number of years. After retiring to Hermon, Austin became a volunteer tour guide at the Cole Transportation Museum, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after tour guides at the museum, with many people requesting him for their guided tours every summer.
When he had leisure time, he loved fishing with his friend Wes “Westy” Willis and playing golf at the Kebo Valley Golf Club, where he shot at least one certified hole in one. He was also the treasurer of the Eastern Maine Seniors Golf Association.
Austin is survived by his beloved wife Charlene and their 5 children, Austin (“Cliff”) Carter Jr. of Old Town, ME, Anne Carter Howard of Morganton, NC, Mark Carter of Portland, ME, Dean Carter of Bucksport, ME, and Christine Carter Millett of Annandale, VA. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Veteran’s Day, November 11th, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor ME, from 1:00-3:00 p.m..
