Barbara Cameron, 84, formerly of East Corinth, died May 4, 2016 at her home. She was born in Cape Elizabeth, December 26, 1931 the daughter of Harold G. and Josephine (Brown) Smith.
She attended schools in East Corinth until 1947. Thereafter she attended schools in South Portland, Lincoln, Auburn and Scarborough, graduating from Portland High School in 1950. Barbara received a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree from Gorham State Teachers College and a Master of Education Degree from the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham.
In 1953, Barbara took a position as secretary at Union Mutual Life Insurance Company in Portland. Some years later, the company established a library and she was hired as its first librarian. For nineteen years, starting in 1963, Barbara taught school in Brunswick and Holden, retiring in 1994. Between teaching positions, she worked as a secretary at Farrington Financial Services in Bangor. After that, she operated a daycare for two years from her home.
Barbara loved the out-of-doors, eventually joining the Applachian Mountain Club. She and her mother were very close and took several camping trips out West.
In 1956, Barbara married Alan Field. He died six months later. In 2007, at age seventy-five, she received a huge blessing when she joined St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Hampden. Barbara derived great comfort and joy from this. It was at St. Matthew’s that she met her precious (verbally adopted) daughter, Nancy Grover. Barbara had a life-long friend, Jannette (Nichols) Palmer. They met in East Corinth when Barbara was six years old.
She is survived by second cousins, Eugene Stocker, Richard Stocker, Diane Davis, and Charles Perkins.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6 pm. Tue May 10, 2016 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am. Wednesday May 11, 2016 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor, followed by a reception in the parish hall.
The Rite of Committal will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, at a later date.
