Barbara Guay

June 17, 1934 — February 5, 2015

Barbara Ann (Bagley) Guay, 80, died peacefully after a long illness, February 5, 2015 at Orono Commons, with her son and daughter-in-law at her side. She was born June 17, 1934, in Orono the daughter of Harvey and Inez Bagley.
Barbara attended Orono schools and graduated from Orono High School, Class of 1952. She married Richard “Dick” C. Guay in 1953, where they celebrated 53 wonderful years of marriage together before Dick passed away in 2006. Barbara and Dick enjoyed spending many summer months at their camp on Pushaw Lake in Glenburn, where they hosted many family gatherings and created memories filled with much laughter and love. Barbara was a member of the Penobscot Women’s Club for many years. She was a dedicated and much loved employee at the University of Maine in Orono for over 40 years, where she worked as an administrative assistant for the Plants and Soils Sciences department in Deering Hall. Barbara always had many fond stories from her work at the University as well as many cherished friendships with her co-workers over the years. Barbara enjoyed vacationing and visiting with beloved family members in New York and California. She demonstrated immense strength and courage to overcome life’s greatest obstacles, selflessly taking on responsibilities in order to tend to the needs of her husband and family. She will be fondly remembered for her kind words, sparkling smile, and sharing hugs with others.
In addition to her parents and loving husband, Dick, she was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Richardson and Alvin Richardson; a sister, Hilda Hill; and two very special friends, Bob and Ginny Paschal. She is survived by her son, David Guay and his wife, Tina (Paschal) Guay of Bangor; two loving grandchildren, Courtney (Guay) Evans and her daughter, Delaney, and Ashley Guay and her son, Parker “The Boy” Gomm; sister, Ruth Richardson of California; brother, Homer Richardson of New Hampshire; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all departments of Orono Commons for their assistance in helping Barbara feel at home in their care. A special thank you is extended to the members of Beacon Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and dedication in seeing that Barbara’s final days were filled with peace and comfort.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5 – 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2015, with Rev. Steven Smith of Orono United Methodist Church, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share in conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the service.
