Hampden - Barry S. Matthews, passed away on December 29, 2022, surrounded by his family at home in Palm Beach Gardens, FL after a two-year battle with Glioblastoma.
Barry was born in St. Stephen, NB and grew up on Campobello Island, NB. Ever since Barry was a boy, he had a passion for fishing. He grew up purse seine fishing in Canada, like his father, grandfather, and several generations before him over the last two centuries. Barry later moved to eastern Maine to start his own purse seine fishing business. He was the proud captain of many vessels in his lifetime, most recently the F/V Ocean Venture and F/V Yankee Mariner. His tenacity, devotion, and expertise were unmatched. His family will continue his fishing legacy as he did for those before him.
As passionate as he was about his work, Barry relished his time off in the winters and lived life to the fullest. He loved golfing, sport fishing, music, and taking his family to Disney World. Barry had a huge and generous heart and loved to help and mentor others, but more than anything he loved to be all together with his family, nothing meant more to him. He had such a will to live, even in his final days. There will never be a way to fill the void he left. But we will always remember him fondly, especially while watching Deadliest Catch, enjoying a Mickey Ice Cream Bar, or duffing a golf shot that would have left him laughing at our expense.
Barry was predeceased by his parents, Winston and Nellie (Phinney) Matthews. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan (McCurdy) Matthews, daughters, Samantha and Sarah; son, Benjamin, daughter-in-law Kimberly, and beloved grandchildren Marley and Winston. He is also survived by his brother, Leroy, nieces, Melanie (Andy) Harris and Megan Galley, sister-in-law, Elizabeth (John) Musacchio, great nephew, Alex Harris, great niece, Ellie Harris, and his father and mother-in-law, John and Suzanne McCurdy, as well as many cousins and other relatives.
Relatives and friends are welcomed to attend a tribute to his life at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
