Basil Thompson

Basil W. Thompson, Sr., 88, died after a brief illness on March 22, 2014 at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Eastville, Nova Scotia in 1926, to Frederick and Lillian Thompson. In 1948 he married Jacqueline (Joyal) Thompson in Laconia, New Hampshire, with whom he shared his life for 65 years.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving in both the Atlantic and the Pacific fleets from 1941 through 1945.
Basil was an accomplished craftsman who owned and operated Quality Custom Canvas by Basil in Lakeport, NH from 1961 until 1991, winning awards for his creative designs. A man of his word, he was respected by his business associates, friends and family.
After retirement, Basil and Jackie moved from Laconia, New Hampshire to Amherst, Nova Scotia, where they lived for 20 years in a house that he built with his owns hands. During that time, they formed many friendships and fond memories. In recent years, they resided in Orono, Maine with their daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and John Moore. Basil lost his beloved wife, Jackie in December 2013.
He is survived by, three children: daughters, Maureen Maynes and Marsha Moore, his son, Basil W. Thompson, Jr. and a sister, Bernice Vincent, of Laconia, New Hampshire. He was predeceased by an infant son, Michael, sister, Hattie Landry and brothers, William, Victor, Arnold and Ansel.
Basil was a grandfather to Jennifer Farr, Ryan Moore, Jared and Abby Martin, Alexander Moore, Ansel and Derek Thompson, and great grandfather to Rosemary, Gabriel and Lily Farr. Basil was a faithful provider whose main goal in life was to see his children and grandchildren advance through higher education.
Internment for Basil and Jackie Thompson will take place in the July in Laconia, New Hampshire. A notice will be posted in area papers. Memorial gifts may be given in Basil’s name to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, PO Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211.
