Hampden - Beatrice L. Smith, 89, went home to be with the lord on February 18, 2019. She was born January 8, 1930, in Harrington, the daughter of Colin and Vera (Conners) Dinsmore.
Beatrice attended Harrington schools, and graduated valedictorian of her class in 1947. Later in life she attended Bangor Community College. In 1948 she married Kenneth F. Smith, of Springfield, Vermont.
She had a career in nursing and worked in many hospitals and nursing homes in several New England states. In recent years, she worked at James Taylor Hospital, and also spent ten years working at Westgate Manor, where she retired in 1995.
Beatrice will be greatly missed as a caregiver for those at Roe Village, helping neighbors stay independent, and remain on their own as long as possible.
She was a faithful member of the West Hampden Baptist Church. Beatrice was also a past member of the Narraguagus American Legion, Post #8, of Cherryfield. She loved music and writing poetry, playing piano and guitar in her younger years. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and doing different kinds of crafts. She was known for miles around for her terrific biscuit making.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth; a son, Stephen; and a sister, Minnie Wass.
Beatrice is survived by her seven children; two daughters, Karen Charpentier and her husband, Jim, of Orrington, Sheila Hodges and her husband, James, of Otis; five sons, Reggie and his wife, Laurie, of Bangor, Rickie and his wife, Tammy, of Hermon, Dennis and his wife, Kristi, of Rockledge, Florida, Kenneth II, of Seattle, Washington, and David, of Hampton, Virginia; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Beatrice loved her family deeply.
The family would like to thank the staff at Westgate for the exceptional care they provided to Beatrice.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 23, 2019, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden, with Pastor Michael Lynn officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 10:00 A.M until the time of service, Saturday.
