Bernie began his new journey on February 23, 2020. He was born in Honeydale, N.B. Canada on August 6, 1939. He will be welcomed to his new place in heaven by his parents, Ralph and Mabel and his siblings, James and Wilda Lindsay.
Bernie graduated from Brownville Jct. High School in the class of 1957.
At a very young age when riding in a car with his parent a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer stepped in front of his dad’s car and held up his hand, Bernie jumped up peering over the back seat and said, “I am going to do that someday, I am going to make people stop for me!” and that he did.
On August 6, 1962 he signed on with the Maine State Police, attending the MSP Academy at Camp Kayes in August with the 21st training troop. After graduating he was assigned to Troop A in Kittery for two years then transferred to Troop E, Washington County then to Troop E, Penobscot County. He began his extended family of Blue that he lived and loved to this day.
Bernie was very loyal and proud to be members of Pleiades Lodge # 173 AF & AM of Milbridge, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Bangor and Portland , Anah Shrine and a former president of the Waldo County Shrine Club, the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Inc., the Blue Knights ME I Chapter and the Maine Retired Troopers Organization having served on the board and was a life member of the NRA.
Bernie enjoyed wood working and he and Doreen built two homes together. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and motorcycling.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 44 years, Doreen; his children, daughter, Laura McBreairty and Mark of Veazie; sons Larry Lindsay and Brandy of Orrington, Steven and Jeanette of Orrington; six grandchildren, Nicole Lindsay, Lindsay and Ryan McBrearity, Ashley Gonzales and her fiancé, Dan Ireland, Hunter and Lucas Lindsay; three great grandchildren, RayLyn McBrearity and Addison and Levi Ireland.
Along his journey he will be greeted at the Rainbow Bridge by his dogs Chief, Smokie, Shadow, Meghan and cat Hobo.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 4 pm until 5 pm, Tuesday March 3, 2020 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, when a masonic memorial service will begin, followed by a celebration of his life with the Rev. Bernie Hammond officiating.
The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., following the service.
Those wishing to remember and honor Bernie in a special way may make a donation in his memory to the Maine State Troopers Foundation, 28 Meadow Rd., Augusta, ME. 04330, these donations will provide a life saving vest for a Maine State Police, K-9 member.
The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice with a special thank you to Skip Curtis and Scott Nason and all the nurses that treated Bernie as family. The Maine State Police for escorting him from his home to the funeral home with Honors. He would be so proud. Thanks Blue Brothers and Sisters, Sgt. Barry Meserve, Cpl. Chris Hashey, TR.
