Brian Demerrit Young, 78, passed away peacefully Monday October 17th, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Brian was born in Brewer on April 21, 1944, the son of Clarence and Joan (Garcelon) Young. He graduated from Bucksport High School Class of “62”. Brian earned an Associates Degree in life sciences and agriculture at the University of Maine. From there, he went on to the University of Maryland, and worked for the government while attending college.
When Brian was nine he became a 4-H member, and continued on until he was 23 winning many awards along the way. Later on he joined (IF YE) the International Farm Youth Exchange. During that time he received an award from Eastern States Grain for outstanding youth farmer for the State of Maine. Brian traveled to Norway as an IF YE delegate where he lived with six different families at age 23. While there, Brian worked with his host family helping them with their farm work and learning their ways of farming.
Brian lived an adventuresome life with skiing, flying planes, helping his brother Derald with flying hot air balloons, and motor cycling. He and his wife, Valerie, enjoyed going to camp and kayaking together. They especially enjoyed a road trip with their camper to the Grand Canyon.
Over the years, Brian owned a construction business, swimming pool business, and a nursery business, where he was the President of the Nursery Association for two years. During his retirement, Brian kept busy with repairing, building, and gardening. One of his building projects was a green house in which came in very handy for storing plant pots, garden tools, and seedlings that he had started in the spring in the basement.
Brian was predeceased by his first wife Cheryl “Cherie” of 37 years, and their son Daniel “Danny” Young. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Valerie “Val”, also by his children Rebecca “Becky” D. Adams and her husband Zack, Jennifer “Sassy” Sjostrom, and his step-children Gina S. Ludden, and her husband Jason, and Jeremy D. Nelson. He’ll also be missed by his grandchildren Aiden Gordon, Chase Ketchen, Angie Sjostrom, Navia and Harmony Austin, and also his brother Derald Young and wife Joy. Over the years Brian lost many friends that had passed away. One of whom was Larry who he missed dearly, and had talked with almost every morning on the phone.
