Bruce Edward Bryan – Obituary
November 19, 1943 - November 22, 2023

Corinth - Bruce Bryan age 80, died suddenly of heart attack on November 22, 2023. Bruce was born on November 19, 1943, in Normal, Illinois, the eldest son of Edward and Margaret (Brown) Bryan. He married Jan (Custer) Bryan in 1970, and their son, Thomas, was born in 1976. In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by his brother, John Bryan; and his sister, Mary Bryan; as well as nieces, Andie Bryan and Gina Kaluba. After the early death of his father, he grew to become the rock of his family and remained so for the rest of his life.

After honorable discharge from the Army in 1967, he earned a BS in Business from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MBA from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His skill in computer systems design led to a successful career in Chicago, working first with Arthur Anderson Administrative Services (where he passed the CPA exams,) followed by positions at Swift Inc., Estech Agricultural Chemicals, and TransUnion Credit Bureau, specializing in Accounting Systems. He also taught evening computer classes at Joliet Junior College.

A devoted husband and father, he prioritized spending time with his family. His intellectual interests were wide and varied: over a lifetime he built an extensive personal library in fields as diverse as geology, astronomy, biology, history, politics, and theology. He was also an avid photographer and enthusiast of jazz music.

In 2004, he and his wife retired to Corinth, ME, and settled on the farm formerly owned by her parents. He continued to pursue his hobbies and also undertook genealogical research both for his family and for a blind friend from his home town. The latter research led to a self-published book on the history of black families in Normal, Illinois. He worked with his wife as a member of Corinth Historical Society and he also quietly supported a number of humanitarian causes.

Memorial donations may be made in Bruce's memory to Care International, Doctors without Borders, or the Safe Place Food Pantry in Corinth. A gathering in celebration of his life will be announced. Condolences may be sent to the family at BrookingsSmith.com.
