Burton Schuckers

Bangor – Burton Wayne Schuckers, 93, died peacefully in his sleep March 2, 2016, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born December 19, 1922, in Emerickville, PA., the son of Lawrence and Mabel (Stewart) Schuckers.

Burton graduated from Reynoldsville (PA.) High School in 1941. After a variety of jobs, he joined Sylvania Electric in Brookville, PA where he worked as a machine mechanic. In 1971 he and his family moved to Bangor, ME where he worked at GTE Sylvania until his retirement in 1986.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Louise; two brothers, Burl and Robert; and his wives, Mildred Jean (Shaffer) and Sue Ann (Caldwell.) He is survived by his daughters, Paula S. Reutershan and husband Don of Hallowell, ME, and Jana S. Raspante and husband Paul of Surry, ME; and three grandchildren, Morgan, Patrick, and Katharine; as well as several nieces in Pennsylvania. He was a member of Hammond Street Congregational Church in Bangor, ME.

For his whole life Burton was an avid hunter, fisherman, snowmobiler, and beagle club member. He loved to be outdoors and working at some task, whether fixing or painting or mowing or gardening. His green thumb was legendary. Not only did he grow and preserve all his produce (along with wife Sue), he also provided a bounty of vegetables to his family and neighbors, along with Manna Ministries and his church’s food pantry in Bangor.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, at Hammond Street Congregational Church, 28 High St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Doty officiating. The family invites friends to share conversation and refreshments in the church parish hall after the service. Interment will be later in the spring at Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville, PA. Those who wish to remember Burton in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Hammond Street Congregational Church to be used for the ecumenical food pantry there.
