Calla Althea (Martin) Douglass passed away May, 27, 2014 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Calla had moved to Arizona to be with her daughter, Aprille, 12 years ago. She was born in Starks April 21, 1927, the daughter of the late Herbert K. and Ivanella (Palmer)Martin. Calla is predeceased by her husband Neal E. Douglass in 1995 and her brother Ashley Martin in 1996.
Calla was a long time active member of Hammond Street Congregational Church; She volunteered for many years at the YWCA before becoming Mary Dyer’s Administrative Assistant and retired after 28 yrs. Calla worked with Peg Bennett’s Dancing School and was a member of Beta Sigma PHI Sorority.
Calla enjoyed, along with her husband Neal, “Archie’s Place” their cabin in the woods in Township 39. Many gatherings with family and friends were had at Archie’s Place and provided the perfect get away to relax and get back to nature which they both enjoyed.
Surviving in addition to her only child, a daughter, Aprille Lynn and son-in-law Frederick M. Heelass of Sun City, Arizona, are two grandsons Christopher B. Reynolds and his wife, Mary of Laconia, NH; Ryan D. Reynolds and his wife, Joy of Yorktown Heights, NY; and three step-grand-daughters, Samantha and husband Dean, Angela and husband Darren and Elizabeth and her partner Mark, all in the U.K. Calla has 5 great-grandchildren and another on the way; two sisters, Haroldine Robbins and her husband, Walter of Norfolk, Va., Alfa Gautreau Patten of Haverhill, NH., two brothers; Bertram Martin and his wife Judy of Boynton Beach, Florida; Kirc Martin and his wife Brenda of Sarasota, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10am Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor with Assistant Pastor Greg Bridges-Music, of the Hammond Street Congregational Church, officiating. The family invites you to join them in celebrating Calla’s life and join them after the service at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor followed by the committal service at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
