Bangor - Caliope A. "Callie" Brountas, 65, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at a Bangor nursing home, on Sunday morning, January 19th. The daughter of Nicholas and Sophia (Alevizos) Brountas, Callie was born in Bangor on February 21, 1948 and named after her paternal grandmother. Callie grew up in Bangor with her family and friends at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. She attended Bangor High School. Callie was a very social person, making friends wherever she went. With her best friend, Brian Mitchell, she participated in many events and trips in and around the Bangor area, including volunteering at the Shrine Circus, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, and activites at the YMCA. She loved attending the Bangor State Fair and the American Folk Festival, and was a big fan of Country Western music. Since 2006, Callie had been a member of Columbia Street Baptist Church, and in recent years, also enjoyed attending services and activities at the Salvation Army. She is survived by her sister, Athena Brountas of Bangor, her brother John Brountas and his wife Gail and family of St. Augustine, FL, her cousin Arthur Brountas and his wife Maria of Bangor, special cousins Stacy Sagely and Jaimie Bond, plus many other Brountas-family cousins. She is predeceased by her beloved parents, her aunts and uncle, and her dear friend, Brian R. Mitchell. Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Friday January 31, 2014 at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor with Captain Timothy Clark of the Salvation Army, officiating. Interment will be held immediately following the service at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor with prayers being conducted by the Rev. Fr. Adam Metropoulos of St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
