Carmel - Carl Edwin “Eddie” Smith Jr, who everyone knew as Ed or Eddie, 68, died unexpectedly March 6, 2025, doing what he loved, working in the dirt. He was born on March 27th, 1956, in Bangor, the son of Carl Edwin Smith Sr. and Shirley J (Smith) Burke.
Eddie attended Hermon High School. Following high school Ed followed his dream of working with heavy equipment and digging in the dirt, including having his own business, Ed Smith Excavation. Over the years he worked with several companies and made lifelong friends along the way that were more like family to him.
In his spare time, you could always find Eddie out hunting or fishing. He had a passion for hunting, and loved to share his knowledge with his family, especially his nieces, nephews, and of course his grandkids. Once they could walk, you could usually find him hunting with his grandkids any chance he got. He loved to spend time hunting and fishing in Greenville, fishing the Allagash, and of course visiting many friends and family at “camp.”
Eddie is survived by his wife Evelyn (Witherly) Smith, his son Eddie Smith and significant other Dianna Robles of Colorado, his son Chris Lozier of Hermon, and his daughter Olivia (Smith) Averill and husband Dustin or Bangor, his stepdaughters, Nicole (Witherly) Lyons and husband Gene of Ellsworth and Jessica Witherly and significant other Bob Smith of Sorrento. He is survived by his six grandkids who he loved more than anything: Cameron Sprague and Dylan Smith of Florida, Dylan Smith and Blake Smith of Sorrento, Madilynn Lyons of Ellsworth, and Miles Averill of Bangor.
Eddie was one of six children. He is survived by his sister Dottie Pinkham and husband Alan of Dixmont, his brother Randy Smith and wife Linda of Troy, his brother Jim Smith and significant other Kathy Mcpheters of Etna, his sister Sherry Neill and husband Stephen of Clifton, and his sister Amy Harris and husband Ted of Hermon. He is survived by his stepfather, Frank Burke of Hermon. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends he considered family. He was predeceased by his mother Shirley and father Carl.
Ed had an impact on many people whether they knew him for a short time or knew him all his life, he will be loved and missed by all. He was a generous and kind soul who wouldn’t hesitate to help anyone. A celebration of life will be held at a later date to gather and celebrate the life of a legend and share memories of construction, hunting, fishing and more.
