Carmen Julia Fuentes died on May 3, 2024, at a Bangor hospital. She was born on June 18, 1963, in Spokane, Washington, the daughter of Maria Rosa and Gregorio Juan Fuentes. She lived in New Jersey and Madrid, Spain before settling with her family in Maine, where she graduated from Orono High School.
After high school, Carmen enrolled at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, where she earned a bachelor’s degree with honors, and a double major in International Relations and French. She was gifted in many ways. She began playing the violin as a child, serving as orchestra concertmistress in school, and continued to enjoy playing music into her adulthood. She was smart, sharp-witted with a flair for drama, and adept at foreign languages. Carmen was proud of her heritage and spoke fluent Spanish. She had great compassion for those less fortunate, and as an adult, she volunteered at various organizations, including the Salvation Army, The Attic, and St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Carmen was close to her Fieldstone family, including the staff who always had her back. She enjoyed listening to music, taking walks, playing cards, and watching movies with friends. She loved to read, particularly spiritual books, and derived comfort from her Catholic faith. Carmen was always very loving and generous to her niece and nephew, and she doted on the cats she had during her life.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her brothers, Greg and Alex; her sister, Maria and husband, Jeff; along with her niece and nephew, Sabrina and Anthony. Carmen leaves many friends in the area, including her oldest and dearest friend, Betsy Graves Rose. She also had many cousins, aunts and uncles living in Spain.
