Carol Ballou Albright
Hampden
Carol B. Albright, 73, passed peacefully at her home on March 31, 2023 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Her two sons, Jeremy and Joey Dionne, who have cared for her at home for several years, were with her.
Carol was born on October 4, 1949 in New Jersey, the first child of James E. and Nancy (Ballou) Albright. Her family owned an island in Casco Bay where she spent summers growing up. Carol had a deep love for all of the natural world, especially the ocean. Time spent on her Deer Isle property was very special to her. She took great pleasure in camping, kayaking, beachcombing, collecting shells and driftwood.
Being a mom to Jeremy and Joey was her greatest joy. Throughout their school life, there were countless sporting events at which she was an enthusiastic fan, cheering them on at games and tournaments, locally and statewide. She loved time spent with her sons and other family members.
Carol attended the University of Maine at Orono where she earned a BS and MSW degrees. Her Masters study was accomplished while also raising two teenage sons and being employed at Community Health and Counseling Services, where she held various positions including community support, supervisor, group home manager and therapist during her career of 35 years.
Carol dedicated her life to empowering people who struggled with mental illness in our community. A fierce advocate for people, for justice, for equality, Carol made a significant difference in the lives of so many. She loved developing and leading teams of dedicated staff. In 2012, she was recognized for her outstanding service, receiving the Dorothea Dix Award.
For over forty years, Carol was an integral part of a unique circle of women friends who enjoy weekly tennis and dinner, outdoor activities, sharing fun, travel in Maine, Florida and abroad. She shared her generous heart, lively spirit, love of music and dance with all who spent time with her.
Carol was predeceased by her parents and Joseph E. Dionne, her sons’ father. She is survived by her sister, Deborah Weil and husband, Richard of Weare, NH, her nephews, Jason, Corey and grandnephew Matt and her brother, James Albright, Jr. and wife Gloria of Pittsfield, VT., and their children.
Family is very grateful to the Northern Light Hospice team for their strong support and caring. Those who wish to remember Carol in a special way, may donate to My Friend’s Place, a non-profit program for people with Alzheimer’s, 703 Essex St. Bangor, ME 04401
