Carroll Oakes

September 22, 1912 — January 27, 2014

BANGOR – Carroll Eugene Oakes, 101, died Jan. 27, 2014 at a local hospital with his loving daughter Carol Ann and granddaughter Debra at his side. He was born Sept. 22, 1912 in Cherryfield, the son of Fred and Minnie (Hall) Oakes.

At the age of 8, he moved to Bangor, living on Essex Street until the last four years when he became a resident of the Sylvia Ross Home. In 1933 he married Helen L. Wilson who died in 1992. In addition to his wife Helen, he was predeceased by a son, Lorin E. “Skip” Oakes. Surviving are a daughter, Carol Ann Pelletier and her husband, Bruce of Hampden, a son, Dana Oakes and his wife, Terry of Florida; 6 grandchildren, Debra Thomas and her husband, Al of Kansas, Marc Fryman of Texas, Russell Oakes of Freeport, Kelly Dent of Georgia, Danielle Jones of Florida and Nicole Kray of Maryland; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Navoinis of Bangor and a special niece, Kathy Duncan of Bath.

Carroll worked as a master carpenter and co-owned a business, Newcomb and Oakes. He worked also on a family farm on Essex Street and for a while at Bangor Gas Works. In an interview he was asked “How does one get to be 100 and be so full of life?” Carroll offered that he prefers to see the bright side of things and takes life as it comes.

A funeral service will be held 4pm Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor with the Rev. Marion L. Hopkins officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 3pm until time of service Friday. Interment will be Maple Grove Cemetery, Bangor. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
