Carroll Raymond Pickard

March 19, 1930 — June 16, 2021

Bangor - Carroll Raymond Pickard, 91, died peacefully in the comfort of his home after a several months battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday June 16, 2021. He was born in Hermon, Maine March 19, 1930, the son of Floyd R. and Eloise (Ellingwood) Pickard.

Carroll was educated and graduated from Hermon High School in 1948. He attended and graduated from the University of Maine Orono in 1952 with a degree in agriculture.

On June 18, 1952, Carroll married Harriette L. Dole, also of Hermon. Until 1953, he worked with his father at Pleasant Hill Farms. His lifelong experience on the farm led him to become entrepreneurial with his passion for the milk production and delivery business. He and Harriette went on to establish Pleasant Hill Dairy in 1953. Over the next 30 plus years Pleasant Hill Dairy, through their efforts along with the efforts of their fabulous employees, grew into a very successful business in and around the greater Bangor area. Carroll retired in 1985 at which time the business was sold. In April of 1991Carroll donated a fully restored 1953 Divco Pleasant Hill Dairy milk truck to the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor. This milk truck represents milk delivery transportation used during the period of 1950's to 1980's.

Carroll was very active in Hermon town affairs for many years. From 1958 to 1969 he was a member of the Hermon Budget Committee where he served as chairman for six years. From 1951 to 1984 Carroll was a member and officer in the Masons. He served as president of the Hermon Recreation Committee from 1960 to 1978.

Carroll served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Bangor Chamber of Commerce from 1971 to 1973. He served as vice president of the board in 1972.

He was a member of the Hermon Zoning Board of Appeals from 1972 to 1974. He was a founding member of the Penobscot Savings Bank in Bangor in 1974. He received the YMCA Community Award in 1972 and from 1974 to 1976 he served on the board of directors for the North Central District of the YMCA. During the same period, Carroll served on the board of directors for the Hermon YMCA and was the recipient of the Hermon Teachers Association Youth Service award. During 1975 he was president of the Pine Tree State 4-H Club Foundation and in 1977 was elected as an honorary member of the University of Maine at Orono "M" Club. In 1978 he was a council member of the General Alumni Association-UMO.

Carroll and Pleasant Hill Dairy donated a Zamboni machine at the beginning of the hockey program at UMO in the 1970's. He was an avid fan and enjoyed attending the Black Bear hockey games over many years.

From 1979-2000 Carroll served as a founding director of the United Bank in Bangor, during which time he helped establish the United Bank of Hermon. His involvement with United Bank was very dear to his heart. The Board presented him a directors' chair commemorating his years of active service upon his retirement in 2000.

For over thirty years Carroll served as cub master and Institutional Representative of the Boy Scouts of America. He served for four years as president of the Katahdin Area Council, BSA. For several years he served as treasurer of the Katahdin Area Boy Scout Foundation. He received the award of the Order of the Arrow as well as the Silver Beaver Award.

Harriette and Carroll purchased a farm in Frankfort where they spent many days enjoying the outdoors, working in the woods and delighting in discovering "Lady Slippers" on the property. They had dreamed of having a sheep farm after their retirement, but tragically Carroll lost the love of his life in 1984 as Harriette lost her battle with cancer. Carroll remarried to Patricia (Parkhurst) Gee and they shared several decades of life together.

In 1998, he and Patricia moved to Barrington, Rhode Island where they both volunteered their time at the Zion Bible College for over seven years. In 2007, they moved back to Bangor.

Carroll was active in restoring the one room schoolhouse on the Billings Road as a founding member of the Hermon Historical Society. He served for a period as president of the Levant Historical Society and was active in restoring cemeteries in Levant as well as other community projects. He and his wife worked to establish and refurbish a historic Pentecostal meeting house in Newburgh Center. For ten years he did extensive work on the grounds as well as rebuilding the bell tower of the historic building.

In the early 1980's, Carroll and his wife attended the New Life Church in Bangor. Then in 1986, they became members of the Glad Tidings Church in Bangor, where they worshipped until the time of their deaths. Carroll and Patricia made eight missionary trips to the country of Haiti. They donated their services at New Missions and supported two young women until they graduated from high school.

Carroll is survived by his three children, Bruce Pickard of Davenport, Florida, Linda Pickard of Lyman, Maine and Stephen Pickard of Salt Lake City, Utah and their significant others. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Barbara Humphrey of Waxahachie, TX., Bonnie Erickson of Ellsworth, WI., and Alan Gee of Phoenix, AZ. and their significant others as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his three brothers and both his wives.

Carroll's love for the outdoors included his passion for gardening, his beloved camp at Schoodic Lake and any chore that would keep him outside and active. In honor of his generous and kind soul, we ask, in lieu of flowers, that you do an unexpected act of kindness for someone in need.
