Orrington – Charleen Marie Giffard, 81, died after a long illness Sunday, December 27, 2015 at a Brewer healthcare facility. She was born June 4, 1934 in Orrington, the daughter of Harry and Bernice (King) Hanscom, Sr. Charleen was a graduate of Brewer High School.
She and her husband of nearly 50 years, Elmer “Giff” Giffard built their home in Orrington and raised 3 children. She was a homemaker, and later worked at Porteous and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House. She loved life, friends, and most of all the time she spent with her family. Charleen also enjoyed camping, gardening, sewing, knitting, and needlework. She and her husband, “Giff”, spent summers at Jenkins’ Beach and wintered at The Great Outdoors RV Park in Florida.
Charleen is survived by 3 children, Scott Giffard and wife Lorena of Orrington, Sheryl Grimes and husband Donald of Holden, and David Giffard and wife Samantha of Brewer; grandchildren Courtney Arthers and husband Nicholas of Hampden, Matthew Grimes and wife Kathleen of Berwick, Joshua Giffard and Emma Giffard, both of Brewer; Magan Laweryson of Augusta; Chad Ryan and wife Krissy of Corinth; great grandchildren Abigail, Canaan, Lauren, Nathaniel, and Kaitlyn; 2 sisters Mary Hamilton of Bangor, and Beverly Rogers and husband Robert of Orrington; a brother Harry Hanscom and wife Judith of Orrington; brother-in-law Edward Campbell of Brewer; several cousins, nieces, nephews; and great friends. In addition to her parents, Charleen was predeceased by her husband “Giff”; brothers George and wife Ethel, Roland and wife Margaret, and Wendell and wife Carolyn; brother-in-law Dana Hamilton; and a sister-in-law Blanche Campbell.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at The Woodlands for the loving care Mom received while living there.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 31, with Rev. Carl Schreiber officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, immediately following the service. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery, Orrington will be in the spring.
