Brewer - On February 19th, 2016 at St Joseph’s Hospital in Bangor, Charles William “Bill” Clark (86) started his eternal journey with quiet dignity with his family by his side. Bill was born May 11, 1929 in Bangor ME to Harold B. Clark and Mary Alice (Buchannan) Clark, and he attended the Bangor School system until 1946. When he joined the US Navy, believing he was going to be assigned to the US Navy band. Unfortunately, the Seabees needed men, so his first assignment was to Guam in the South Pacific; he was transferred to the aircraft carrier USS Antietam CV-36 where he proudly served until he was honorably discharged in 1948. Soon after being discharged, he joined the Maine National Guard Band as a drum major. Musical interests included the Bangor Band, Nat Diamond dance band, Shrine Band, Shrine Dance Band and many other gigs with local musicians.
Bill married the love of his life, Dorothy “Dot” Kitchen on Dec 7, 1951. They settled in Brewer and raised three children, Cheryll, Scott and Barbara. Bill and Dot celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in 2015. During their retirement years they traveled extensively. They spent many winters in Hawaii enjoying the warmer weather. He retired from Sears after 35+ years of loyal employment. Bill was a proud member of the Rising Virtue No. 10 AF & AM of Bangor; 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Bangor, the Portland Valley Consistory and Anah Shrine. He received a 50 year Veteran metal from the Grand Lodge of Maine in 2015. Bill, also, had many interests in his children’s musical, sports and leisure activities as well as he enjoyed reading, politics and TV. Bill’s focus was always in the welfare and love of his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He is survived by, but will be sadly missed by his loving wife, daughter Cheryll McLaughlin of Lawrence, MA; son Scott Clark and wife Sharon of Bangor; daughter Barbara Carlow and husband Ronald of Hermon; grandchildren Noel and Alex Taylor; Ryann and Grant Chamberlain; Noah McLaughlin; Jessica and Douglas Westman; Michelle Carlow and significant other Christopher Bryden and five beloved great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Natalie, Myranda, Jack, and Anna.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, brother Robert Clark; brother-in-law Malcolm Kitchen; son-in-law Nelson McLaughlin; grandson Nelson McLaughlin Jr. and great-grandson Samual Taylor. He will be remembered for his love of music, shiny cars, cats, sly jokes and witty banter. Bill packed his luggage, caught the Chattanooga Choo Choo, passed Tuxedo Junction, on his stairway to the stars. He did it his way.
