ORONO - Charles S. “Charlie” Devine, 88, passed peacefully on December 16, at his home, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on January 3, 1932 in Orono, Maine to M. Margaret (Stewart) Devine and Charles M. Devine.
Charles worked for many years at BMHI in Bangor and retired after 37 years of service. Charles was an avid chicken enthusiast and breeder, and an early and lifetime member of the Central Maine Bird Fanciers Club, which was founded by his close friend, Forrest Hooper. He loved attending poultry shows and made many lifelong friends through the hobby. Charles spent his younger years working with race horses and shared his great love and appreciation for horses with his children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren in the years to follow. In his retirement, Charles developed a love for painting and making clocks. He enjoyed surprising friends and family with his hand painted creations, often bearing the likeness of their favorite pets – or his specialty – favorite breeds of chickens. Charles always had a clever joke to tell and loved to make people laugh. We will miss seeing the twinkle in his eye and hearing those funny stories he could tell so well.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Mildred E. (Kitchen) Devine, in 2001. Additionally, he was predeceased by his sons, Kenneth and Stewart Devine, as well as his brother, Bernard Devine.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Diane Langley and her husband, Lory Langley, of Hermon; his son, Rory Devine and his wife, Vicky Devine of Hermon; grandchildren, Anita Langley Leadbetter and her husband, Charles Leadbetter of North Yarmouth, Hilary Devine and her fiancé, Brad Wilkins of Orono, Bridget Devine, Travis, Jake and Hannah Morin; his great grandchildren, True, Grace and Vivian Leadbetter and Noah Pomeroy.
Charles’s family would like to extend special thanks to his daughter-in-law, Vicky, for her attentive loving care, which allowed him to stay in his own home through his final days.
Following his wishes, a graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Orono, Maine at a later date in the Spring.
