Charles Linwood Oliver, 93, passed away on December 1, 2024, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor.
Charlie was born in Bridgewater, Maine on April 23, 1931, the son of Agnes (Grant) Trevett and Charles “Wiley” Oliver. He grew up in Harrington, Maine and graduated from Harrington High School, and later earned a BA in accounting and auditing from Husson College. The Korean War interrupted his college years, so he took a four-year break to serve in the US Navy on the USS Donner. After college, Charlie and his bride, Lola (Ross) of Bradford, Maine, spent two years in New York City while he worked for Union Carbide on Park Avenue, before returning to Maine where he worked out the remainder of his career at Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket. He advanced to the position of Plant Accountant, and retired after 29 years.
He and Lola raised three children and they spent each weekend visiting family and enjoying their camp on Boyd Lake. Charlie loved to hunt, fish and play horseshoes, and he looked forward to the annual family vacation to Old Orchard Beach with a trip to Fenway Park to watch the Red Sox.
As a widower, Charlie married Susan (Blake) Delano of Lee, Maine, and enjoyed 15 years embraced in her large and loving family, and working alongside them at their family owned and operated Mt. Jefferson Ski Area.
Charlie is survived by his children, James and Susan (Gerry) Oliver of Baileyville, David and Julie (Smart) Oliver of Belgrade, and Susan O’Brien of Bangor; as well as his step-children, Marjorie and Jim Louder, Dan and Sandra Delano, Janine and Dan Smith, and Byron and Julie Delano, and their families; grandchildren Ashley Oliver and her husband, Matthew Jennings, Georgeanne Oliver and her partner, Benjamin Spencer, Joseph Oliver and his wife, Crystal, Patrick O’Brien, and Grace O’Brien; one great-grandchild, Vivienne Oliver; sisters-in-law, Joanne Ross, Lorraine Welch, Cynthia Wickett, and Eileen Ross and her partner, Mel Bouchard. He was predeceased by his parents; step-father, Moody Trevett; wives, Lola and Susan; sister-in-law, Priscilla Hunter; brothers-in-law, Leon Trask, Paul Trask and Robert Ross; step-children, Randy Delano and Connie McLeod.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Maine Veterans’ Home, as well as those at Eastern Maine Medical Center for their care and compassion given during Charlie’s final days.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Sunday, December 8, 2024, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, following the service.
