Charlotte Treworgy

December 26, 1927 — December 19, 2018

Charlotte Harris Treworgy, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Dirigo Pines, Orono, surrounded by her loving family on December 19, 2018. Charlotte was born on Dec. 26, 1927, in Athens, Ohio. She was the daughter of Mary McLellan McDonald and Wilmer C. Harris (professor of ancient history).
Her family moved to a farm in Pataskala, Ohio when she was nine years old. The farm was the town’s old fair grounds and still had a horse race track. One of Charlotte’s most cherished memories of the farm was the ornery pony, Buck, that she shared with her brother and sister. Charlotte’s mother Mary suffered from worsening asthma, so during Charlotte’s high school years, the whole family moved to a more soothing climate in Clearwater, Florida. Charlotte finished her first three years of college studying Liberal Arts at Stetson College in Deland.
She spent her sophomore summer taking classes at the Univ. of Maine where she met her future husband Harry Treworgy (married 1948). She graduated from the Univ. of Maine in 1949 with a degree in Child Development, and then ran the nursery school for the Child Development program, where students observed child behavior.
Charlotte and Harry had three boys Mark, Dean and Gary. She was a very devoted and involved mother. She was room mother at the Asa Adams Elementary School in Orono for several years, a Cub Scout den mother, a board member of the Old Town Orono YMCA, and she also taught Sunday school. She continued to volunteer at church throughout her life. She enjoyed her work in the family gift shop in Orono called the Crown and Miter.
After 30 years in Orono, she and Harry moved to Castine where they opened Treworgy Ships Chandlery overlooking Castine Harbor. Being an adventurous lady, she traveled all over the world with her husband, making over 100 trips abroad often accompanied by family or friends. They slept with the Bedouins and camels in the Sinai Desert, spent five days on a small sailboat on the Nile in Egypt, and slept on the open boat deck. But, her favorite trip was across the US to Alaska with her family in a pickup camper. Charlotte and Harry moved back to Orono in 2003 to enjoy the retirement community at Dirigo Pines.
Charlotte was a member of the Huguenot Society, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and the Priscilla Alden Society.
We are all grateful for her exceptional kindness and willingness to care. She was a wonderful mother and an example to her children and grandchildren. Her elegant, sweet, and gentle manner will be very much missed by all who had the privilege of loving her.
Charlotte was predeceased by her husband, Harry, and older siblings, Elizabeth Coggill and Joseph Harris. She is survived by her sons Mark, Dean, and Gary, her two daughters-in-law, three granddaughters and ten great grandchildren. The family will hold a private memorial service. Those who wish to remember Charlotte in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Maine Society of Mayflower Descendants, P.O. Box 202 Boothbay, Maine 04537. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com or sent to 3876 Union St., Levant, ME 04456.
