Cynthia Ellis

Cynthia (Lane) Ellis, 96, of Orono, passed away November 24, 2018. She was born September 14, 1922 in Milford, New Hampshire. Cynthia was the daughter of G. Homer Lane and Susan C. Lane.

Cynthia moved to Torrington, Connecticut in first grade and graduated from Torrington High School in 1940. Following graduation she went to Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts and received her BA in 1944. She achieved a Masters degree in Education at Smith College in 1948.

She married John F. Ellis, whom she met in the eighth grade, on February 2, 1946. She and John lived in Edinburgh, Scotland where John was getting his doctorate and where their son John was born. She returned to Amherst, Massachusetts where their children Susan and Timothy were born.

Cynthia taught nursery school at Smith College and then spent decades teaching Kindergarten in Clinton, New York. Her love for children lasted until her death.

Cynthia lived at Dirigo Pines in Orono from 2003 until her death. She enjoyed the company of fellow residents and appreciated the care provided by the excellent staff.

Cynthia’s positive spirit inspired her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved all of them in a special way. Many of them will remember the fun times they spent with her during the summer at Merepoint in Brunswick, Maine. All of her family will recall with joy the Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings.

Cynthia enjoyed needlework, quilting, knitting hats and knitting truck loads of knit dolls. She was a member of the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono.

Cynthia aged with dignity and humor, accepting the inevitable graciously. Cynthia was once challenged to describe her life in 6 words. Her response was Happy childhood, Loving marriage, Terrific children.

In addition to her parents, Cynthia was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, John Ellis, her brothers, George Lane and Robert Lane and her sister, Charlotte Mack.


Cynthia is survived by her three children, John Ellis and his wife, Stefica of Cumming, Georgia; Susan Almy and her husband, Christopher of Charleston, Maine and Timothy and his wife, Margaret of Whitesboro, New York; her 10 grandchildren, Heather Warren and her husband, Timothy, Tomania Kelly and her husband, Paul, Benjamin Ellis, Sam Almy and his wife, Lynne, Rachel Fitzpatrick and her husband, Jim, Isaac Almy and Amos Almy, Tim Ellis, Matthew Ellis and his wife, Heather and Katie Potter; her 10 great grandchildren, Tyler Warren, Gabrielle Kelly, Chelsea Kelly, Meredith Kelly, Julia Kelly, Connor Fitzpatrick, Cara Fitzpatrick, Hailie Potter, Madalyn Potter and Samuel Ellis. She is also survived by her sister, Susan Scavo.


A memorial service will be held 1:30 pm Friday, December 7, 2018 at the Kenduskeag Gathering Place at Dirigo Pines. Burial will be private.
