D. Gloria Wheeler

ORONO - D. Gloria Wheeler, 91, passed away peacefully June 22, 2022, at an Orono healthcare facility. She was born February 18, 1931, in Gardiner, the daughter of Stanley J. and Betty M. (Scott) Smith.

Gloria spent her entire life in Orono. She met her husband Merton on the first day of classes at Husson College, where she was studying to be an executive secretary. Gloria went on to be an executive secretary for an insurance company and later worked for the University of Maine for over 25 years. She was a life long member of the United Methodist Church in Orono. One of her favorite hobbies was cake decorating. Gloria and Merton enjoyed traveling all over the United States as well as attending theater shows whenever they could and were regulars at the Collins Center of the Arts. She also had a love for roses.

She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Merton Wheeler; a son, Rick Wheeler and his wife, Chris of Bangor; a dear grandson, Ben Wheeler, of Oakland; and a step grandson, Matthew Denbow, of Bangor.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, following the service. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Orono.
