March 24, 1928 — September 1, 2023

HAMPDEN - Daniel Gill, 95, passed away Friday, September 1, 2023, surrounded by his adoring family and under the care of his devoted daughter.

Dan was born on March 24, 1928, in Kingston, New York. He was 1 of 7 children and grew up in the challenging times of the Great Depression and World War II. At age 17, Dan decided to enter the United States Navy with no idea, that by the grace of God, World War II would come to an end in less than a year.

Upon returning home to New York after his service was complete, he was accepted to Rider College (University) in Lawrenceville, NJ where he was Treasurer of Phi Sigma Nu fraternity. Dan ultimately graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. During his tenure at Rider, he also met the love of his life and future wife, Maria “Mimi” Malafronte.

After college Dan moved to Connecticut, married Mimi in 1952, and built an amazing life with her that included three children; Jefferey, Christopher, and Diane, and over 70 years of marriage. They called the small town of Oxford, CT home for over 50 years.

Dan was drawn to numbers and made a career in the finance and accounting departments at some of Connecticut’s largest employers including General Electric and Winchester Repeating Arms (Olin). Dan’s work ethic and passion for continued improvement led him back to the classroom where he earned a Master of Business Administration Degree (MBA) from the University of Bridgeport. After finding success in the corporate world, Dan decided follow his entrepreneurial instincts into the retail food business where he owned and operated franchise stores named Alpen Pantry in several CT and NJ shopping malls. He also owned a gourmet cheese business that he operated with his son, Christopher for over a decade until he retired.

Dan served on the Oxford Board of Finance as Chairman and was involved with the Oxford Republican Town Committee for many years. He was also a long-time member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Oxford, where he served as Building Committee Chairperson when the Church was constructed in 1966. Dan was an active member of the Oxford Lions Club and the Sand Dunes Swim Club in Woodbury, CT.
Dan influenced his family in ways that he will never fully know. He, together with Mimi, shaped a lineage of faithful, hard-working, determined, tough, and educated children and grandchildren that could handle the rigors of the world.

Dan is survived by his wife, Mimi (Malafronte) Gill, of Hampden, Maine; sons, Jeffrey Gill of Shirley, Massachusetts, and Christopher, of Waterbury, Connecticut; daughter, Diane Ingerson and her husband, Timothy, of Hampden, Maine; grandsons, “Bubs”; Justin (Melissa), Trevor (Jamie), Cody, and Lance (Jill); and his granddaughters, “Petunias”; Rhiannon (Seth) and Brie (affectionately known as "Brat"); eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Eleanor Gill (Curran), of Kingston, New York; and brother, Terry Gill, of Chattanooga, Tennesee.
