BREWER - Daryl A. Briggs, 73, died October 9, 2021, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. He was born April 28, 1948, in Lincoln, Maine, the son of Allison and Louise (Whitney) Briggs. Daryl graduated from Brewer High School in 1966. He went on to Cornell University where he got his Bachelor of Science in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering. Cornell is also where he met his future partner in life, Pam Moyer. They married in 1971 and in June of this year celebrated 50 wonderful years together. Following graduation, Daryl joined the family business, Briggs, Inc. and its affiliates, all beverage distribution companies. He worked his way up, starting with bringing one of the first business computer systems to the Bangor area, and eventually became president of the company. Daryl was very active in many professional organizations. He held various positions including president of the Maine Beer and Wine Wholesalers; a national director for the Wine and Spirits Association; a director for the National Beer Wholesalers Association; and served on the board of trustees of the Maine Motor Transport Association Workers Comp Trust. In 1998, the companies were sold to Colonial Distributors in Waterville, where Daryl became one of the vice presidents. After the sale of Colonial Distributors, Daryl went to work as the supply chain logistics manager of Affiliated Materials Services, an arm of Eastern Maine Healthcare. He worked there until his retirement in 2014. Daryl was also very active in the community as well. Over the years he was a member of City Club, Jaycees, Rotary, Brewer 2000, and the Brewer Planning Board. In addition, he was a trustee and the chairman of the board of the Good Samaritan Agency. He was a Mason, St Andrews Lodge #83, and was active in Anah Shrine. Daryl was the president of the Bangor/Brewer Shrine Club and served as treasurer and assistant treasurer of Anah Shrine. He was also the long time treasurer and a past president of his investment group, Penobscot Associates. Daryl’s greatest joy was his family. He was so proud of his two sons, Erik and Nathan, and their families and accomplishments. One of the things he was proudest of was the fact that both sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. It spurred a lifelong affiliation with the Boy Scouts. He started out as Scoutmaster of Troop 15 in Brewer and kept it going despite the small group of boys participating. Daryl served the Katahdin Area Council in various positions including vice chairman, chairman, and on the board of directors. He was also the fundraising co-chair for the Scout service center in Orono. In addition, he was the chairman of the Scout Committee. As a result of his support of the Boy Scouts he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, which meant the world to him. Daryl was also a long time member of All Souls Congregational Church. He served in many capacities including clerk, treasurer, deacon, moderator and member of the board of trustees. Finally, he was recently a member of the board of the Penobscot Valley Senior College. Daryl had a broad base of knowledge and expertise. He loved the Bangor community and was happy to serve in any capacity to make it a great place to live and work. He was an amazing son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, colleague, and friend and will be missed more than words can say.
Daryl’s primary focus and greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his loving wife Pam of 50 years; two wonderful sons, Erik A. Briggs and wife Rena of Framingham, MA, and Nathan P. Briggs and wife Molly of Hampden, ME, and 2 beautiful granddaughters, Addison Marie Briggs and Makenzie Ella Briggs; brothers Bryan Briggs and his wife Debbie Walls-Briggs and Gary Briggs and wife Tammy Ruuk Briggs and their children; and sister Gayle Briggs and her husband Joseph Sukaskas.
