David Kaplan

September 15, 1953 — March 5, 2016

Dr. David K. Kaplan, 62, passed away unexpectedly, March 5, 2016. He was born in Amityville, NY, September 15, 1953, the son of Samuel and Evelyn (Bernstein) Kaplan.
David attended Hiram College in Hiram, OH, where he received his Bachelors of Science. After graduation, he was accepted into St. George’s Medical School in London, and was trained as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and worked at the Royal Brompton Hospital. David was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. After his training, David took a year off from medicine to pursue his lifelong love of computers, taking several courses in the subject. It was through both his medical and computer training that led David to devise Medical 3D Imagery Systems. Most recently, David was working at St. Joseph’s Hospital as an Emergency Room Physician, though he had worked on-call for many hospitals in the state, including St. Mary’s in Lewiston.
David was one of a kind, and a man of many talents. He was self-taught in the art of carpentry, roofing and plumbing; using this knowledge to renovate his island house on Great Diamond Island in Casco Bay. Around the Island, David was known as “Doctor Dave”, fixing all manners of bumps, bruises and cuts for both children and the occasional pet, tricks he had picked up from tending to his own three rescue dogs; and diagnosing ailments from afar, if necessary. He directed plays on the Island, and was a talented pianist, as well. David loved to entertain the children with juggling and magic tricks; and was an avid reader of many genres, but was most fond of Science Fiction. He was a wonderful teacher, having donated his time to his alma mater, Hiram College, in order to teach students about the medical systems in other countries, after visits to both Africa and Iraq.
In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his brother, Nathan Kaplan. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan (Baker) Kaplan; two sisters, Carole of Germany and Elisa of Texas; sister in law, Elizabeth of New York; nephews, Jonathan and Alexander; nieces, Caroline and Sarah; his aunts, Myrna and Wilma; as well as many special cousins and friends.
A memorial service honoring David’s life will be held, 7:30 pm, Monday, March 14 at the Chapel of St. Joseph’s Hospital, 360 Broadway, Bangor. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
