In Loving Memory of Dave Lester: A Life of Love, Service, and Inspiration.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dave Lester on December 15, 2023. Known by many names - David, Dave, Coach, Mr. Lester - he has undoubtedly touched the lives of countless individuals throughout the years.

Born in Washington state and raised as a Navy brat, Dave had quite the adventurous childhood before settling down in Hampden, ME. It was there that he met his lifelong friends, Henry, Keith, Scott B., Scott C., and Chris. This group shared many rowdy memories of camping, fishing, and good ol’ fashioned tomfoolery.

In his twenties, he served as a firefighter in the US Air Force, getting to experience the warmth of Florida and Hawaii. However, the allure of his beloved Maine brought him back, and it was there that he found his true love, Mary. Together, they spent an incredible 36 years of marriage, raising two wonderful children. Dave was the kind of husband and father we all strive to be, with a warm-hearted nature that was recognized by everyone he met.

Dave's commitment to community service was unwavering. For nearly two decades, he served as Wagner Middle School's custodian, a role that went far beyond the expected. Known for his trustworthiness, reason, and patience, Dave became a cherished mentor to every student he encountered. He embodied the true spirit of Wagner Pride and left an indelible mark on the Winterport community.

Dave's dedication didn't stop there. He selflessly devoted over a decade to Winterport's recreational department, serving as a coach and director. Coaching was his passion and calling, and he transformed the lives of countless young athletes. Dave's tireless efforts and countless hours of mentorship shaped the development of future generations, leaving a lasting legacy in the memories of those he coached.

When Dave did make time for himself, he spent it on the water. A self-proclaimed world class set of angling skills and incredibly innovative mind allowed him to create fishing equipment and boats that are inconceivable to most. He loved to spend hours at his camp and in his various boats, catching every fish that made the mistake of crossing his path.

Throughout his courageous battle with cancer over the past eight years, Dave's resilience and unwavering spirit inspired all who knew him. We would like to formally thank his “fan club” at Cancer Care of Maine for their dedication to his treatment and care for his spirit.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Joanna; his daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Nathan; his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Cindi; his nephews, Eric and Mark; his dearly supportive family friends, Lorri and Steve; and finally, his cherished grandchildren, Brody and Mila. His legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by his presence.

Please join us in honoring Dave's life and celebrating the profound impact he made on our community. From 1-3pm on December 23, 2023 at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street Bangor, we will gather to celebrate Dave's remarkable life and bid him farewell with the love and support that he so generously shared with others.
