Brewer - On Thursday, October 27,2022, David Burton Sawyer, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away after a car accident. He was 69 years old. Born in Bangor and raised in Brewer,
David attended the University of Maine, where he studied zoology. He fell into a fortuitous career in computer technology support with ADS, which was later acquired by Tyler Technologies, and he remained with his Tyler family for 25 years until his retirement in 2018. He then worked as a driver for Downeast Transportation’s Island Explorer bus system on Mount Desert Island—a retirement job that he truly enjoyed.
As a family member, friend, and coworker, David was as loyal and honorable as he was hilarious. Quick-witted and soft-spoken, David had the perfect joke for every occasion, and his presence brought a sense of calm to any room. He enjoyed woodworking, loved reading history, sharing meals and drinks with his friends, and spending time at his family’s lakeside camp. He was a master of the outdoor grill. David loved his pets; he leaves behind two dogs, Minnie and Maxine. Above all, he was devoted to his family, which was the center of his life. He was blessed to spend two years as an adoring grandfather to his daughter’s son Wyatt, one of the brightest lights in his world.
David was predeceased by his father, Burton and mother, Christine; he is survived by his brother, Marc of Pepperell, Massachusetts; his beloved wife and best friend of 35 years, Jane of Brewer; their children, Matthew and Patrick of Bangor, and Meagan of Dedham; his grandson, Wyatt David; an extended family of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends on both sides of the Atlantic; and the endless stories of humor and goodness he has left each of them to tell.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 18, 2022 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, immediately following the service.
