Dean Mcphee

March 4, 1939 — February 7, 2015

BREWER - Dean Lawrence McPhee, 75, passed away February 7, 2015. He was born March 4, 1939 in Fairfield, Maine, youngest child to Charles and Alma (Whitney) McPhee.

He spent much of his childhood in the Danforth area and graduated from Danforth High School in 1957. He and his wife, Sharon, moved to the Bangor area shortly thereafter where they spent the next 47 years together. As a welder and metal fabricator, he enjoyed tinkering with or building just about anything, whether for work or in his spare time.

When he wasn’t working he could be found playing cribbage, golfing, bowling, competing in mini-golf tournaments, pitching on the softball diamond, or playing horseshoes for shiny quarters. He frequently tended to his tomato plants, tackled jigsaw puzzles, spruced up the backyard pool area, was a fixture coaching basketball for the Brewer Parks and Recreation Department, and suffered as a lifelong Cleveland Indians fan.

After his wife’s passing, he added baking to his list of hobbies. He made a point of learning to make, and mastering, Sharon’s legendary whoopie pie recipe and got to be an accomplished chocolate chip cookie chef as well. His two grandchildren, Connor and Brianne, knew that when Grampy arrived with a certain yellow Domino sugar container they were in for a hefty dose of homemade goodies, high-fives, and hugs. Dean never missed an opportunity to help someone--anyone--at any time of the day or night, and was rarely seen without a smile on his face.

Dean is survived by two children, Shawn, and wife Lisa, of Bangor, and Andy McPhee of Bangor; two grandchildren, Connor and Brianne; a brother, Ainsley McPhee and his wife, Betsy, of Bath; a sister, Freda Grant, of Lucerne, a number of nieces and nephews and their families, and two special friends John Drew and Mary Ellen Lee. In addition to his parents, Dean was predeceased by his wife in 2012, as well as his brother Percy. Shawn, Andy and Lisa would like to thank Dean’s niece, Tracey Smith, and her husband, David, for all their help and support. On Dean’s behalf, his family would also like to extend an apology to the Coca-Cola Corporation for what will certainly be a noticeable decline in sales of Caffeine Free Diet Coke in the greater Bangor area.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2015 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 S. Main St., Brewer, with Rev. Grace Bartlett, officiating, and where relative and friends are welcome call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be later in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith.
