Dennis Soucy

BANGOR - Dennis Donald Soucy, 83, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013. He was born Aug. 7, 1930, in Bangor, the son of Frank and Mary Veilleux Soucy. He graduated from John Bapst High School in 1948, and worked for several years with his father and brothers at Frank's Bake Shop before becoming a salesman with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. Within a few years, he inaugurated his own business, Dennis "Don" Soucy Real Estate and Insurance. Deeply committed to the welfare and advancement of his community, Don served six terms on the Bangor City Council, holding the post of Mayor for three terms. A faithful lifelong communicant of St. John's Church, he was a founding member of the St. John's Credit Union, later to become the Bangor Federal Credit Union, serving as President from the Credit Union's inception in 1956 until his retirement in 2008. After retiring from his own business in 1992, he worked for several invigorating and rewarding years with Sargent, Tyler & West Insurance until 2005. Don was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Rotary Club He served on the Board of Trustees for John Bapst High School and on the Board of Directors for St. Michael's Catholic Charities and for The Bangor Housing Authority. He was instrumental in bringing The Penobscot Job Corps to Bangor, serving as Chairman of the Community Relations Council. He was also Chairman of the Bass Park Corporation from 1981-86. The survival of the Bangor City Nursing Home is due in great part to Don's efforts to preserve its funding. Don loved dancing, gardening, poker and fish chowder. His enthusiasm for women's' basketball was such that it would be shirking honesty not to mention how much Cindy Blodgett's moves on the court enriched his life. More than anything else, he delighted in his family-each new grandchild made him feel younger than ever.Don is survived by his wife, Constance Barton Soucy; his son, Lawrence and his husband, Ubaldo Leli; his son, Dennis and his husband, Windle Davis; his daughter, Michelle and Ramdas Iwanko; his daughter, Christine and her husband, Michael Pruyn; his grandchildren, Abra Soucy Lodge and her husband, Peter Lodge, Nicolle Morneault, Karra Morneault, Mirabai Iwanko, Caleb Angell, Cassie Pruyn, and Tina Pruyn; by Gene and Lois McBride and their daughters, Kelly Rheaume and Carrie Hansen and their children; by his sisters-in-law, Angela Soucy, Nancy Soucy, and Barbara Dufour; brothers-in-law, Philip Dufour and Charles Barton; and by many beloved nieces and nephews. Don was very specially blessed by the kindness and devotion of his nephews, Paul McCann and Joey McCann; his niece, Karen Gilgan; and his brother-in-law, Charles, and in his last months by the care and exceptional dedication of the staff at Stillwater Health Care. He is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary; and his brothers, Robert, Henry, Joseph, John, Frank, and James; and by his sisters, Jeannette, Dorothy, Genevieve, Edith, and Mary. Don was the last of his immediate family to pass, and did so with honor, love and humility.Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Nov. 5, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John's Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the Parish Hall immediately following the mass. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.
