Domingos Antonio 'Tony' Fernandes (z), 92, of Bangor, Maine, died on April 29, 2014, at the Bangor Veterans Home, in Bangor, Maine.
Born in Palmerton, PA on April 12, 1922 son of the late Manuel Jose Fernandes and Maria Pereira Necho. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albino Fernandes and Thomas Pereira, sister's Emily, Anna and Rosalina Benda.
Tony enlisted in the Coast Guard on July 2, 1942 as a signalman and went to school at Westfield High School in Massachusetts. He was on active duty for two years in the United States and Europe in World War II. He was honorably discharged on March 19, 1946. He work many years as store managers for many grocery stores throughout Maine, Shop n' Save, First National, and A & P.
He was married to Jeanne Greenlaw on February 8, 1946 in Belfast, Maine and they had four children. Tony cherished his memory of his life to his family, two sons John Fernandez, wife Linda of Bernard, Maine, William Fernandez, wife Diane of Bradford, Maine and daughters, Nancy (Fernandez) Higgins, husband, William of Greenville, Maine and Vicki Fernandez Newell, husband George of Holden, Maine and a brother Manuel Fernandes, Jr. in Swansea, MA.
Tony had five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Anthony with his son Christopher of Trenton , Andrew Taylor of Machiasport with his two children Aiden and Sarah and Mark Taylor, wife Emese of Camden, and Felicia Fernandez of Brewer, and Thomas Fernandez of Bradford.
In his free time, Tony loved working in his gardens before arriving at the Veterans Home in Bangor and blessed with a great sense of humor, he was always ready to share a good joke with family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Maine Veteran Home, of Bangor, for the care given to him.
Private funeral services will be held at the Veterans Civic Center Cemetery in Augusta, Maine at a later date.
