Don Mitchell

February 3, 1932 — October 23, 2024

Don David Mitchell, 92, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, Oct. 23. He was born in Etna, Maine February 3 , 1932 the son of George W. and Grace L. (McBrierty) Mitchell.
Don, with his five siblings grew up living and tending their family farm. He graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1950. Following graduation, he worked over 42 years at Lane Construction as a heavy equipment operator. Don made numerous friends with fellow colleagues at Lane and would often reminisce and joke about his experiences throughout his construction career. He took great pride in his reputation as a dedicated, hard worker.
Don met BettyLou of Ellsworth, Maine and married her on September 10, 1965. Don and BettyLou were renowned for being beautiful dance partners, as well as superb hosts of many spirited family gatherings and holiday parties, wintering in Florida and traveling extensively. Don’s primary interests included snowmobiling, four-wheeling, stock car racing, manicuring his yard, puttering in the garage, and spoiling his loyal dog, Rambo.
Don was a 50 year member of Benevolent Masonic Lodge #87 in Carmel. He was also an active member of Anah Shrine for 49 years as well the Royal Order of Jesters CT 150 Bangor.
Don is survived by his wife BettyLou, his sons and their wives Bryan and Laurie Moore of Chester, NH; Ron and Tracey Moore of Freeport, Maine; George and Ane Mitchell of Ruskin, FL; and his brother Dale Mitchell and wife, Dianne of Newport, Maine. Don enjoyed all of his granddaughters deeply and uniquely; Bryanne Flitter and husband Brian of Chester, NH; Arley Wells and husband Jon of Portsmouth, NH , and Lauren Moore of Freeport, ME. He also leaves behind four great grandchildren, Raina, Shayne, Ilsa and Declan, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by siblings Fred Mitchell, Thelma Stauffer, Geneva McRae, Glenn Mitchell, Winnie Merry; son Glenn Moore, and grand daughter, Alexandra Moore.
Don will be greatly missed by family, friends, and numerous community members of Etna, Maine where he lived his entire life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church, Plymouth Maine, 2pm on Sunday, November 3rd with reception to follow at the church.
