Donald Barrett

July 29, 1933 — February 14, 2014

Donald Raye Barrett, 80, passed away peacefully at home, February 14, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He was born, July 29, 1933 in Eastport, the son of Lorenzo H. and Serena (Acker) Barrett.
Don attended Eastport schools, graduating from Shead Memorial High School in 1953. He worked a variety of jobs after graduation, before taking a brakeman position with the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and later as an engineer, from which he retired after 33 years. Don’s lifetime passion was guns and ammunition and he and his wife were the owners of Mill Creek Rod and Gun in Orrington for over 30 years.
Don enjoyed fishing, camping, snowmobiling and hunting. He and his family spent many years camping at local campgrounds, building lifelong friendships. They also enjoyed many good times at their camp on Hermon Pond. After being able to retire at the age of 54, he and his wife took great pleasure in traveling in their RV all over the country.
Don was known as a man whose honesty and knowledge of firearms earned him the respect of the entire gun community. He was the greatest of Dads; teaching his children the importance of honesty and integrity.
In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his daughter, Brenda Daigle; brother, Melvin Barrett; niece, Gerry Baxter, and a special nephew, Terry Flaherty. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan (Flaherty) Barrett; son, Gerald “Chip” Barrett of Orrington; daughters, Nancy Gormely and her husband, John of Dedham and Cindy Black and her husband, Jeffrey of Corinth; 9 grandchildren, Brian, Alicia, Nicholas, Nathan, Jason, Justin, Benjamin, Matthew, and Katharine; 9 great grand children and one to arrive in August; and a special niece, Elaine Hall of Eastport. He will also be sadly missed by his beloved dog, Buddy.
A memorial service celebrating Don’s life will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2014 with the Rev. Buddy Franklin officiating, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main Street, Brewer, where relatives and friends are welcome to call 12 p.m. until time of service. The family invites relatives and friends to share in conversation and refreshments at the Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel of Brookings Smith immediately following the service. Interment will be at Rainbow’s End Cemetery in Orrington in the spring.
