Donald Clough

June 12, 1945 — October 16, 2024

Bangor - Donald M. Clough, M.D., died at his home on October 16, 2024, surrounded by his family and best friend, Tim Falvey, after battling multiple cancers.

He was born June 12, 1945, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, his mother's hometown, while his father was serving in WWII as a Navy physician in the South China Sea.

After the war, the family moved to Sayre, Pennsylvania where he grew up. He was active in Boy Scouts, achieved Eagle Scout, and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, Honor Boy Scout.

Donald graduated with a B.S. from Albright College in 1967. While in college he met Madelyn Bower, a nurse at Reading Hospital. She was to become his life partner and loving wife for nearly six decades.

He graduated M.D. from Tufts Medical School in Boston in 1971. After graduation, he pursued his surgical training at 1st Surgical Service, Boston City Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and was Chief Surgical Resident at Hartford Hospital.

After training, he served as Lieutenant Commander in the Navy Medical Corps,
assigned to Quantico Naval Hospital where he was Chief of Surgery.

Donald moved his family to Bangor in 1979 and was an active medical staff member at St. Joseph Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center. He became Board Certified in General Surgery, inducted as Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the New England Surgical Society. At St. Joseph Hospital he served as Chief of Surgery, Chief of Medical Staff, and Board of Trustees. Early to recognize the value of minimally invasive surgery, he was the first in Bangor to perform laparoscopic gall bladder removal, as well as various other procedures, which he offered in Bangor more than a year before they were being done at most major medical centers. He had an interest in obesity surgery and did much to advance surgical treatment for patients suffering with this affliction.

He was a member of All Souls Congregational Church for over forty years and served on the Board of Trustees of that institution.

Donald had several hobbies including opera, gardening, woodworking, and especially fly fishing. He was a member of all three salmon clubs on the Penobscot. He and his brother, Robert, were the first Americans to fish the Panoi River in Russia. He made fishing trips to several exotic places around the world, but was happiest bass fishing with his friend Tim Falvey on the Penobscot.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Madelyn, of 56 years, Bangor; daughter, Cameron Dalton and husband, Chris, of Veazie; son, D. Matthew Clough of Bangor; and precious daughter, Jennifer Clough of Bangor; grandchildren, Jack Dalton and wife, Lanie, of Ellsworth; and Sarah Dalton of Milford; sister, P.J. Mouquin of Sparkill, N.Y.; brother, Robert Clough, M.D. and wife, JoAnn, of Bangor; and brother, John Paul Clough of Thomasville, Georgia. Several adoring nieces and nephews throughout the country. Predeceased are his parents, Dr. Donald and Harriet Clough; and brother-in-law, Charles Mouquin. He owned many dogs, but most recently adored his Yorkie, Mozart.

As his final wish to encourage the love of learning, he donated his body to the Tufts Medical School Anatomical Gift Program in Boston.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 24th at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice.
