Donald Joseph "Don" Dumaine, 77, of Whitneyville, ME, reported to his final duty station on February 25, 2024, after a life well-lived and well-loved. Born on May 19, 1946, in Worcester, MA, to Alfred and Emma Rita (King) Dumaine, he carved out quite the life for himself.
Don was a Marine through and through, serving from 1964 to 1972, including over 3 years in Vietnam. He rose through the ranks like a knife through butter, reaching Sergeant and leaving with an Honorable Discharge and a chest full of medals that clinked like wind chimes.
Once done protecting our Country, Don moved to Connecticut with his fun-loving island wife, Ingrid, to earn a living in 1972 at Anchor Glass as a “hot end” machine operator and build a family. Once Anchor Glass decided in 1997 to shatter the plant in Connecticut, Donald decided to hit the open road as a tractor-trailer driver. He eventually hung up the CB and rig keys in 2011 and retired to Downeast Maine.
In Maine, when he wasn't standing at attention, you could find Don in his workshop, turning wood into wonders, listening to old country music, or outside on the porch, birdwatching and spending time with his family. He also had a PhD in teasing—his loved ones can attest to that!
Donald's love story continues with his fiancé Ann Merchant, who's surely missing her partner. He's also leaving behind a family who appreciated his playful spirit: daughter, Pamela (and her husband Ted Laythe), son, Jason Dumaine, grandchildren, Alicia, Ashley, and Nicholas, and his nieces, Linda, Sharon, and Christine will all miss his wisecracks and teasing more than they'll ever admit.
Ann's brigade will also feel his absence: sons, Ricky Merchant and Tim (with Theresa), daughters, Shari (with Brian Morin) and Kerri (with Ryan Bickford), and their extended familied. all of whom were drafted into Don's playful platoon.
Saluting him on his final journey are his late father, Alfred W. Dumaine, mother Emma Rita (King) Dumaine, his beloved wife Ingrid (Ward) Dumaine, brother Robert Dumaine, and sister Eileen (Dumaine) Babbitt.
In true Don fashion, flowers are outranked by donations. Please send any contributions to the Maine Veterans' Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401—because every veteran deserves a parade.
Brookings-Smith in Bangor, ME, is entrusted with Don's last prank—er, plan. Here's to a man who never met a joke he didn't tell or a bird he didn't chat with. Semper Fi, Marine. We salute you!
