BREWER AND BANGOR - On the evening of Sunday, April 15, surrounded by her loving family, Dottie Ohmart passed away to rejoin those who left before her. She was born Dorothy Hazel Moore in Keene, NH on March 24, 1923 to George and Inez Moore. She graduated from Keene High School and then married Melvin Perkins, Jr. Her daughters, Sheriden “Sherry” and Jayne were born before Sonny tragically died in an accident. She then married Leslie M. Ohmart Jr. and moved to Brewer where Les had bought a pharmacy. It was in Brewer that her last 3 children, Leslie “Lee”, David and Cecilia ‘Cece” were born.
Dorothy was active in the Bangor/Brewer community. She was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, both organizations her children participated in. She was a member of the charitable PATAWA Club, active on the board of the EMMC and St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliaries, the Symphony Women and sat on the board of the Phillips Strickland Home in Bangor. Dottie and Les socially participated in the Saturday Nighters’, dining and dancing with other members. Dottie and Les were part of a very special circle of eight friends that traveled the world extensively together, coining the themselves “FOGS HIT” (Freese, Ohmart, Graffam, Sargent, Historical Island Tours). Their slogan was “raise your right hand if you are having a good time”. Dottie felt blessed to have many good and lifelong friends. She was very athletic and participated in both golf and tennis at the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono and the Hidden Lakes Golf Club in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Spiritually she was a member of both the Methodist churches in Brewer and New Smyrna Beach. She was also a skilled and avid bridge player and continued to play until just before her death.
She will always be remembered by her family as being loving and generous with her time and attention to them. She was an outstanding cook and instilled in all her children the love of food and tradition. She lived her life in a positive way, a bit of wit on her lips seasoned at times with a sprinkle of sass; famous for one liners that would make every family member and friend chuckle. Holiday times were festive and centered on family traditions from the food on the table to the decorations that adorned her home. She took joy in the simple things in life such as finding the first lady slippers of the year, happy when she found a rare white one, to gardening around her impeccably manicured home. She chased slugs with a box of salt on many occasions to save her beautiful flowers. As she aged she grew more beautiful with her stunning white hair and her twinkling blue eyes.
She was predeceased by her beloved son David in 1973 as well as her two husbands. She is survived by Sherry Treat and her husband Ronald of Holden, Jayne Miller of Cary, NC, Lee Ohmart and his wife Sari of Brewer and Cece Ohmart of Lamoine. Nana will also be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Kelly Drake, Mike Treat, Jessica Scaccia, Hilary Hays and Devin Ohmart and several great grandchildren who knew her as Gigi.
A private graveside service will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Brewer on May 19th from 12-1 where she will be laid to rest alongside Les and David. A memorial service will be held 2pm Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. Relatives and friends are invited to join with the family after the service at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor for a reception. It was the wish of Dottie that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the David Marshall Ohmart Memorial Scholarship in her memory. Please send donations to Brewer High School, 79 Parkway South, Brewer, Maine, 04412. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
