BANGOR – Dorothy M. Simmons of Bangor passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2021at a local nursing facility. She was 94. She was born on October 22, 1927, in Monson, Maine, the elder of 2 daughters of William H. and Alice (Zimmerman) Mitchell. Dot was educated in the public schools of Monson, graduating as the Valedictorian from Monson Academy in 1944. After high school, she taught school in Willimantic until she entered Bangor Maine School of Commerce in September 1945. Dot graduated with a Stenographic Diploma in June 1946. She worked at P.E. Ward in Dover-Foxcroft until April 1948, when she married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Simmons. Soon after, she and Ken moved to Augusta before finally settling and making their home in Bangor. Dot became a homemaker and the mother of 3 children. She was very supportive of her husband and children, and as a member of Hammond Street Congregational Church was very active in many programs and activities there. Dot was a good cook and enjoyed doing needlework, knitting and creative craft projects. When her children got older, she took a position at Bangor Mental Health Institute as a secretary in October of 1970. Dot retired from BMHI in December 1991 but remained on the job working on a special project until 1992.
In addition to her parents, Dot was predeceased by Kenneth, her husband of 73 years. She is survived by a daughter, Lois Simmons-Ingram and her husband, Kenneth, of Ocean Pines, MD; and two sons, Deane J. Simmons and his wife, Sheryl, of Portland, ME and their children, Eric Simmons and Jenna Simmons; and Craig M. Simmons of Portsmouth, NH and his children, Daniel Bragg and his wife, Caroline, and Nicole Walker. She is also survived by a sister, Clarice (Mitchell) Page of Bangor.
A private service will be held by the family at the New Blanchard Cemetery in Blanchard, ME.
