Dorothy Turner

ORONO-Dorothy “Dot” Edith (Ullman) Turner, 93, died peacefully May 12, 2020, at Dirigo
Pines where shehad been living since December 2018. Dot was born July 9, 1926 in Kearny, New Jersey to Walter Albin Ullman and Edith (Kaino) Ullman.

She graduated from North Arlington High School and Douglass College (then New Jersey College for
Women) where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition. She came to Orono in 1947 to
work in the Extension Service at the University of Maine in nutrition research. She intended to stay
only a couple of years, but that changed when she met the love of her life, Walter Weeks Turner, and
married him on August 20, 1949. They were married for more than 50 years and raised four children.

After the children were grown, Dot worked as a substitute teacher at Orono High School and as an
immigration inspector at Bangor International Airport.

Dot’s life was defined by love. As she herself wrote in a remembrance, “Love of God and family are the
foundations of my life.” She loved the annual family vacations and any other time that she could be
with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the
church choir and the University of Maine Oratorio Society and had a chorus part in the University’s
production of “The Merry Widow” opera. She was active in the Orono Health Association,
AAUW, AFS, Thursday Club, Orono Historical Society, and was always involved with the church fair
and anything food related at the Church of Universal Fellowship, as well as two women’s groups and
the Board of Deacons. One of her joys was in twice hosting women from Chile, one a student and
another a teacher at Orono High School, as part of an international exchange program.

Dot loved to travel; she and Walter took many trips, often with their good friends, Evelyn and Vance
Dearborn. They visited national parks, Newfoundland, England, Scotland, Alaska, Germany, Austria,
Australia, New Zealand, South America and Scandinavia. But one of the places Dot loved best was
their timeshare in Southwest Harbor, where they spent a week every September.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Walter; brothers Robert Ullman and Earl
Ullman; nephew and godson, Keith Ullman; sister-in-law Jammie Ullman; and son-in-law Paul
Vanderhoof.

Dot is survived by her daughters, Barbara Turner, of Orono, Maine, Catherine Vanderhoof, of Caldwell,
New Jersey, and Elizabeth Turner and her husband, Dwight Trueblood, of Durham, New Hampshire;
son, Robert Turner and his wife, Elizabeth Jensen, of Clinton, New York; grandchildren, Amy Clark and
her husband, David, Benjamin Moy-Turner and his wife, Carla, Annie Turner and her husband, Steve
Henke, Dylan Trueblood and Gregory Trueblood; and great-grandchildren Geoffrey Clark, Meredith
Clark, Miles Henke and Eli Moy-Turner.
