Duane Giles

December 13, 1924 — September 26, 2013

BANGOR - Duane Harris Giles, 88, passed away peacefully on Sept. 26, 2013, in Bangor. He was born Dec. 13 1924, in Sherman, the first son of Floyd and Florence Giles.

Duane enjoyed a life filled with exploration, discovery and music with a loving extended family as a youth growing up in Sherman. Upon graduation from Sherman High School in 1942, he entered the Army Air Force as a Flight Engineer on B29s and served during World War II . Duane had a passion for flying which began as a teenager and continued throughout his life. After leaving the military, he married Marilyn of Oakfield. They began their life together in Sherman then moved to Bangor with their young family. He worked at the Bangor Daily News as a typesetter retiring in 1979. During retirement, he pursued many creative endeavors including bird carving (winning blue ribbons) stained glass creations and was always woodworking. Duane and Marilyn traveled and explored making many new friends throughout the country. Duane was a fun Grampy and Dad and he enjoyed a rich and adventurous life with family and good friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Eldon Giles. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Swallow) Giles; his son, Michael and his wife, Carol, of Brielle, N.J.; daughter, Gail Bates of Barkhamsted, Conn.; four grandchildren, Alison, Geoffrey, Christopher, and Kelly; three great-grandchildren, Nick, Max, and Claire; and his sister, Althea Zimmerman and her children.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Rex H. Garrett, officiating, Relatives and friends are invited to call 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
